DIOCESE OF JOLIET
OFFICE OF CHILD AND YOUTH PROTECTION COMPLIANCE REQUIREMENTS
FOR SCOUTS AND SCOUTING VOLUNTEERS
Updated March 2023
-
As of December 31, 2022, the Diocese of Joliet no longer charters troops/packs, but allows parishes to enter into facility use agreements with troops/packs
-
All scouting volunteers* in the diocese must meet the Diocese of Joliet Office of Child and Youth Protection compliance requirements based on their role with scouting Catholic youth. This includes an active VIRTUS account at virtusonline.org.
-
Your required compliance will be based upon your role within scouting and with the JDCCS. Compliance requirements are outlined below. Find the role that best describes you and look across to row to see your compliance requirements.
-
Depending on your past and current employment or volunteerism in the diocese, you may already have the indicated requirements met [for example, if you are a teacher at a Catholic school, catechist at a parish, etc. you may have already taken a VIRTUS Protecting God’s Children (PGC) training]. The compliance requirements for all roles within the diocese can be found on the Diocese of Joliet website.
-
If you feel that you have completed a requirement and the JDCCS disagrees, please check with your local administrator (the person at your parish, school, etc. in charge of checking compliance), then report any discrepancy in your VIRTUS account to the local administrator for the JDCCS, Justin Reyes at jreyes@dioceseofjoliet.org.
-
If your volunteerism with the JDCCS is your sole role within the diocese, you will need to connect with the current Scouting rep at the Diocese of Joliet who will become your local administrator for your VIRTUS account—Justin Reyes at jreyes@dioceseofjoliet.org.
*Scout volunteers are defined as anyone engaged in direct contact with scouts within any active scouting organization within the diocese, to include Scouts USA, Cub Scouts, and Girl Scouts of the USA.

**Protecting God’s Children
Protecting God's Children® for Adults is training conducted by VIRTUS® certified facilitators on the prevention of child sexual abuse. The training makes participants aware of the signs of child sexual abuse, the methods, and means by which offenders commit abuse, and five easy steps one can use to prevent child sexual abuse. Two videos are the centerpiece of the training: A Time to Protect God's Children™ and A Plan to Protect God's Children™. The facilitators incorporate policies and procedures into the training defining child sexual abuse, addressing the reporting of child sexual abuse, the screening, and selection of employees and volunteers, and victim advocacy.
