JDCCS Vocation
Awareness Patch

Vocation Awareness Patch image_edited_ed

The Joliet Diocese Catholic Committee on Scouting developed this patch to promote vocation awareness and to encourage young men and women to pray for vocations, and to consider a vocation to the priesthood, diaconate, or consecrated life.

“He Leads, I Follow” is the motto of the recently beatified Blessed Mother Maria Theresia Bonzel, foundress of the Sisters of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration. The center is meant to symbolize a monstrance, holding the Blessed Sacrament and reminding us that the Church draws her life from the Eucharist. The color blue reminds us of Mary, Mother and Model of Vocations.

JDCCS St. Francis Xavier Patch

Patron of the Diocese of Joliet

Final ARt Clip_edited_edited_edited_edit

The Catholic Church has a long history of honoring the saints. Bishop Martin D. McNamara, the first bishop of the Diocese of Joliet, chose St. Francis Xavier as the patron saint of the newly formed diocese. Bishop McNamara was formerly the pastor of St. Francis Xavier Parish in Wilmette, so it is likely that he chose the saint to honor his former parish.  Tradition also holds that his choice of patron saint was also influenced by the fact that St. Francis was a missionary and serving in Joliet felt a bit like being a missionary! This short video, by Dr. Debra K. Mooney of Xavier University, helps us understand the mindset of being a missionary, whether in far flung locales, like the places Francis Xavier went, or places close to home, like Bishop McNamara. â€‹

Francis Xavier’s great ambition was to bring the world to Jesus Christ. Armed only with his breviary and a book of meditations, Francis preached the Gospel to the poor and sick, spending most of his time ministering to their needs. His nights were taken up in prayer. His only attention to his personal needs was to have a pair of boots. He barely ate enough to stay alive. As a missionary, Francis Xavier left behind flourishing churches that were the foundations for the Catholic faith in Asia.
